Eagle River, WI (June
23, 2009) – “We love to race Crandon,” exclaimed Mike Oberg after
finishing in the runner up spot for the Forest County Potawatomi
Chairman’s Cup. Along with the Cup race, TORC Rounds 5 and 6 were held
at the iconic off-road race facility in Crandon, Wisconsin. The
previous race on the 2009 Traxxas TORC Series presented by AMSOIL trail
saw the Oberg Motorsports #80 PRO-2WD Chevy race among the leaders only
to have a mechanical failure cut his race short. The team was looking
for that podium finish that would put the team right into the
championship hunt.

TORC Rounds 5 and 6
- Saturday
saw the #80 AMSOIL Kumho Tire Chevrolet Silverado get an incredible
launch at the drop off the green flag. Only Todd Leduc was in front of
the gray and black Chevy truck. The fast sweeping Crandon track
really allowed all
the ProPower horsepower go to work. Unfortunately the AMSOIL Kumho Chevy
rolled at the far end of the track, taking Mike Oberg out of contention.
It took track workers a few laps to put the truck back on it wheels, but
during the process, too much oil had drained from the engine, preventing
Mike from reentering the fray. Officially, Mike finished seventeenth.
-
- Sunday
had Mike Oberg fighting changing track conditions. Early on in Round 6,
the track was very wet and muddy and within two laps, Mike had used all
twenty-one visor tearoffs. By the mandatory yellow, the track became
very dry, with dust hanging all over the track. Fighting vision problems
the entire race, Mike crossed the finish line in eighth place.
-
-
“I just couldn’t see
today,” remarked Mike Oberg. “First it was muddy and I used up my
tearoffs, and later on in the race it was so dusty you couldn’t see
either. Fortunately we don’t have extra prep work for the Cup race. We
just have mount some new body panels, and go through are usual things
for a race. There’s really nothing additional we have to pay special
attention to. Somehow we came out of the TORC round in great mechanical
shape.”

Forest County
Potawatomi Chairman’s Cup
-
The sixteenth annual
event had nine PRO-2WD race trucks get a half-mile head start over the
seven PRO-4x4 race trucks for the all out ten lap dash for the cash and
the huge silver cup.
-
-
When the starter
waved the green flag Mike Oberg and Ricky Johnson somehow avoided all
the mayhem and took off like jack rabbits. RJ was in the lead with Mike
and his #80 AMSOIL Kumho Chevy right on his bumper. Meanwhile, the rest
of the field was knocking each other out as the two front runners stayed
in clean air.
-
-
Halfway through the
race, steam started coming out of Oberg’s engine over flow tube. The
engine was overheating. Every lap the steam became more pronounced. Even
the track announcer, Scott Rehn, said Mike wouldn’t make to the
checkered flag. Well, Mike proved everybody wrong, not only did he make
it to the finish, he crossed the line second overall, just behind race
winner Ricky Johnson.
-
-
As soon as Mike got
out of the truck for the awards presentation, AMSOIL Motorsports
director, Jeremy Meyer, gave him a great big hug. His second place
finish became a huge testimonial for the strength of AMSOIL synthetic
engine oil.
-
-
“We ran this ProPower
engine out of water, and AMSOIL kept this truck running and running
hard,” noted Mike Oberg. “It’s unbelievable. The Kumho Tires were
perfect for the conditions. My crew is just awesome. I live just up the
road in Eagle River and I had all kinds of family and friends here
today. A special thanks goes out to Scott Swendson who kept my crew fed
and hydrated all weekend long. As always, my guys were really focused in
on the truck and Scott played an important role as team chef. This is
the best second place finish I’ve ever had. Congrats to Ricky, he uses
AMSOIL and runs on Kumho Tires too. If you want to run up front you
need AMSOIL and Kumho Tires.”
